Look no further, because it doesn’t come any better! Lufthansa First Class MUC-ORD in First Class

Around 40 minutes before departure I headed to the gate, and shortly after boarding began. First and business class passengers had a dedicated jetbridge, which always makes for a more intimate experience. Once I reached the plane I was greeted by a smiling flight attendant, that promptly showed to my seat (1A). The retrofitted cabin on the A340 is small (only two rows), but it looks as gorgeous as always. We were four guests today – all accommodated at the far corners of the cabin. Our crew would be excellent throughout our flight – something that’s not really a big news on a LH flight in first. I was promptly offered a drink (champagne, please!) and some mac nuts (my weakness). A refill was then offerred, together with pj’s (always comfortable, although I do not like the pants’ material) and Rimowa amenity kits (I got a blue one) filled with La Prairie goodies!

After having a nice picture taken I went to change and I wore LH’s comfy slippers. We pushed back on time, and shortly after we were en route towards Chicago, where we were scheduled to land ahead of schedule (7:10pm).


Just in case this is your first Lufthansa trip report that you see, this is how LH First Class looks like: elegant, understated, classy.

Around 20 minutes into the flight the flight attendant asked me whether I would join them for dinner, but I said I would rather wait a couple of hours as I had had lunch in the lounge not too long earlier. Side niote: I am not sure whether that’s normal or not, but ever sicne my wife got pregnant I have been eating a lot – almost as much as her – resulting in a few pounds put up. Unfortunately, my new, busy work-travel schedule meant little time to work out regularly, and you all can imagine where that led. So, all these first and business class flights did mean something bad for me after all…!

I watched Jurassic World sipping champagne, while the crew served dinner (from the usual carts) to the other customers. Then, when everyone was done I decided it was my turn to eat. The crew must have hated me 😉

I started with the caviar, properly served (as usual) with a vodka shot. I really still love each and every caviar service in first class, as it really is the embodiment of luxury and fine dining (besides tasting really good!).

Then, I had all the appetizers today, all of which were very good. The first one was was a salmon tartare with mustard sauce and marinated cucumber. While it was creamy, it was quite delicate.




That was followed by the breast of duck that, as you can imagine, was very tasty (and served room temperature, so not too chill).



Probably my favorite appetizer, though, was the blue cheese cream on fig and pear compote – It went deliciously well with bread.


Historically I’ve found Lufthansa appetizers hit or miss, and these ones definitely were winners.

After the appetizers a sorbet with mango was offered – something new I do not recall seeing on LH menus before, but something certainly appreciated during such a feast.



Still, the best was yet to come, as the real winner here was the entrée – the roasted goose. Yes, because Lufthansa serves goose with potatoes and red cabbage salad in its first class. Goose is a very delicate yet flavorful bird, and the execution here was particularly good, as the meat was tender and the sauce just right. I definitely like how Lufthansa always has its menu designed by Michelin-starred chefs that try to create and offer German flavors – after all, this is the biggest airline in Germany and things shouldn’t be any different than that!

Another thing I really like on LH is its onboard cheese selection, which is always outstanding. The menu has detailed descriptions of every cheese offered, and the cart serving them sports cute little flags on top of each cheese signaling the country of origin – brilliant! Today’s selection can be found on the attached menu.

I finished off this superb meal (honestly, the best so far on LH First Class) with an espresso and a couple of pralines, after which I asked my excellent flight attendant whether she could make my bed.

I slept off the food for 3-4 hours before waking up, and then I watched some tv. I really believe that the selection on Lufthansa’s IFE be the weakest point of an otherwise perfect first class product. Generally, I find the tv shows selection good, but the movies one weak. The flight went by pretty quickly, and around 75 minutes before landing a second meal was offered.

Lufthansa’s pre-arrival meal is a real meal, not just a snack (albeit lighter than the first one, it’s very substantive).

As the menu stated, there was a choice of sandwiches, a pumpkin soup, and fruit/dessert. As you can imagine, at this point I was anything but hungry, but given my gluttony I couldn’t resist trying some pumpkin soup to celebrate the Fall season. Thick, pungent, served with pumpkin seeds, this was one of the best pumpkin soups I had so far (no kidding – although my knowledge of pumpkin soup is limited to pre-made ones from Whole Foods).

We landed shortly after in Chicago, around 25 minutes ahead of schedule.

So, another Lufthansa First Class flight proved me, once more, that LH is a great carrier with a great all-around first class product. From top-notch lounges, to a great on-board hard product, to an always-excellent service, you can always rest assured that you will receive a true first class experience with them.

True, some things seemed to have changed (i.e. no more cigars in the FCT), but the quality of food and service was among the best ever received aboard LH. Let’s just hope that Lufthansa will keep its game up and force BA, in the medium-to-long run, to follow suit.

    The Lufthansa First Class is truly amazing. Each time I read a review I’m somewhat sad that I always invest my miles in Business Class bargain tickets. Definitely need to safe for First Class next time!
