FRA-YYZ on Lufthansa First Class (B747-400)

Flight LH470, FRA-YYZ
B744, Seat 83C, First Class
Dec 28th, 2014

We were among the last passengers to board, and once we took our seats the two flight attendants serving the First Class cabin in the upper deck came by to introduce themselves and to offer pre-departure beverages. I got some champagne, and I enjoyed some of the macadamia nuts offered.

After that a pajama was offered (an improvement to the last one I got last year, as while it was still from Van Laack it did not features buttons all the way down but only in the upper-body part of the sweater); a RIMOWA amenity kit was offered, with Lamarin moisturizer inside.

After about 15 minutes the captain said that further delays were expected, as the plane needed to be de-iced. That delayed turned pretty quickly in a 2-hour delay, which put our ETA in Canada at 6pm. Having a checked bag and a 55 minutes connection I was starting to think I would not make it to Dallas today… I had no other choice than sit tight, and enjoy my first class cabin…

The cabin on the 747-400 is different from that A330’s. Not only because of the bed, but in general there is much more space to move around. Privacy-wise, though, I find the A330 (new configuration) to offer a better product.

Since the wait had gotten long, the FA’s offered us the amuse bouche, which was some sort of pickled watermelon. It actually tasted pretty good.

Two hours after our original departure time we took off on our way to North America. As you can imagine, my mood was pretty ruined by knowing that I would not make it to Dallas that day, but  I still decided to enjoy my flight since there was nothing I could realistically do about it. I went to the restroom and changed into my pajama for the flight.

I was feeling very tired after waking up so early in the morning, and so I asked the flight attendant to postpone my meal by a couple of hours since I wanted to rest first. As you all probably know, Lufthansa’s B747-400 features a bed next to the main seat, making it effectively a very room space to lounge and rest. The TV is big (but not as big as on newer planes), but in all honesty Lufthansa’s in-flight entertainment is less than stellar in terms of selection.

I laid down in bed (very comfortable and with thick padding) and I fell asleep right away). When I woke up again, everyone had just finished eating their meal. The younger flight attendant stopped by and asked me whether I felt rested and whether I wanted anything to drink. Once she came back with some water she asked me whether I was ready for having lunch, and when I said yes she started working on it.

The menu looked like this:

Choice of Appetizers
Caviar with the traditional Garnishes
Aniseed marinated Salmon, Coconut Foam and Asparagus
Cecina de Vacuno, air-dried Beef, Salsify and Grapefruit Salad, Spinach Cream
Yogurt Mousse, mashed Asparagus, Green Peas and Mint
Fresh Leaf Salad, fried Oyster Mushrooms, Pumpkin and Cherry Tomato served with Raspberry Vinaigrette or Herb Mustard Dressing
Cinnamon flavored Tomato Soup, smoked Duck Breast and Croutons
Choice of Main Courses
Roast Goose, Red Cabbage and Potato Dumplings with caramelized Herbs
Greenland Halibut with Broccoli Couscous, Bay Shrimps, mashed Chickpea and mild Garlic Mayonnaise
Braised Beef Cheek with Sweet Potatoes and Amaranth
Lemon Lasagna braised with Tomato Sugo, Ricotta Cheese and Spinach
Selection of Cheese and Dessert
Holzhofer Rezent, Chablis, Quadrello di Bufala, Bavaria blu and Banon Cheese with Grapes, fresh Figs, toasted Pine Nuts and Dried Fruit Chutney
Brique au chocolat, warm Chocolate Bar with spiced Pineapple and Passion Fruit Olive Ice Cream
Dried Almond Milk with Grapefruit Ice Cream of Green Tea and Licorice

While waiting I started watching the latest rendition of Hercules, which I enjoyed. My table was set and not long after caviar and all the works was brought out. Vodka was not offered this time, but I must say I had my champagne glass almost full still. Lufthansa’s caviar is very tasty and well-balanced. It could feel a little bit fishy to the untrained palate, but that fishiness is actually flavor that  explodes once the eggs reach your mouth. I of course had it with toast, crème fraiche, and eggs.

While pre-selecting my appetizers I had opted only for the salmon, but since the FA brought all three of them I decided to sample them all. Sometimes descriptions could be misleading. The salmon was good but its texture was a bit odd – like when you leave fish out of the fridge for a little too long and the exterior dries out a bit. The cured meat was excellent, as was the mousse. While I never find Lufthansa’s appetizers in first class to be superb, they are always creative and good.

The soup dish followed the appetizers. It was a tomato soup with duck breast and croutons. It was tasty, but too salty.

As main course I decided to try something very German-sounding: roasted goose. I am a big fan of duck meat in general, and I was looking forward to the extra gameness of goose. I was not disappointed. The meat was soft and flavorful, the potato dumplings coming with it very tasty. Again, the dish wasn’t superb, but it was very good and well executed.

I skipped dessert but I sampled some  cheese with some port wine. This was served with grapes and figs, and a multitude of crackers was also brought out. I killed the meal with a cup of espresso coffee and a very yummy praline.

Following the cheese, I had an espresso with one praline. Overall, this was a great meal.

Overall, the meal was very good, creative, and well executed. Service throughout was impeccable, and I cannot really fault Lufthansa for anything here.

After finishing watching Hercules I felt sleepy again, and so I moved back to the bed to take a nap. When I woke up from it I realized I would not make it to my flight in Toronto, and so I bought 1 hour of wifi (for 9 EUR) to tell people waiting for me that I would likely have to spend the night in Toronto.

The flight went by without other major disruptions. The First Class seat on Lufthansa is always very comfortable, and relaxing while reading or using a laptop/tablet is all very easy.

About 90 minutes before landing, the pre-arrival meal was offered. Now, usually this is a hefty snack – even on Lufthansa. But given the festive season (I believe), it became a full three-course meal. Here is the “Special Moment” menu:

An amuse bouche was served before the appetizer. It was very good.

A cart with the appetizers was brought out. Everything in here looked pretty good, and I opted for an assortment that included the foie gras, the salad, and the scallops and prawns. Everything was really well executed.

As main, I opted for the lobster ravioli. Not excellent, but very good indeed.

While I was way beyond full at this point, I still decided to try the pear mousse as dessert. It was excellent.

The meal was overall really good, and it set me up well for an evening of belly ache! 😀

In any case, 45 minutes before landing I went to the restroom to change, and we landed in Toronto some two hours after our scheduled arrival time. I will write about what follows next. For now, let me say that this was likely the best Lufthansa flight I have had to date. Great, attentive crew; fantastic hard product; excellent F&B; wonderful ground service… Lufthansa has – hands down – the best all-around First Class product across the Atlantic.
