United flies first biofuel-powered commercial flight

In a significant step towards a more sustainable and less gasoline-dependent industry, United’s subsidiary Continental Airlines flew today the first biofuel-powered commercial flight between the two hubs of Chicago O’Hare and Bush Intercontinental in Houston.

The company also committed to buy 20 million gallons per year of the algae-based fuel. Since 1994, the company’s fuel efficency improved by 32% – the company website reports.
